About the BMP format
BMP (Bitmap) is the uncompressed raster format of Windows. Every pixel is stored as is, so the quality is perfect but the files are enormous: a 12 megapixel photo takes about 36 MB. It has no transparency in common use and is rarely accepted by websites or messaging apps.
About the JPG format
JPG (or JPEG, after the Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression is tuned for photographs and produces small files that every camera, phone, browser and app can open. It supports neither transparency nor animation, and each re-save discards a little more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert BMP to JPG?
JPG produces small files that open everywhere, from decade-old software to web forms with strict size limits, which makes it the universal format for photos. BMP files are uncompressed and therefore huge, and most websites and apps will not accept them.
Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a little detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At 85 percent quality or higher the difference is invisible for most images, and you can push the slider to 100 for maximum fidelity.
Can I convert several BMP files at once?
Yes. Add up to 5 images of up to 30 MB each, convert them in one go, and download the results one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Are my BMP images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to any server, so your pictures never leave your computer or phone.
Is the BMP to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely. No account, no watermark, and no limit beyond 30 MB per image. PixKit is supported by ads.
