About the GIF format
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates from 1987 and lives on because of its animation support. It is limited to 256 colours per frame and simple on/off transparency, so photos look grainy and files are large for what they show. For still images there is almost always a better format.
About the JPG format
JPG (or JPEG, after the Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression is tuned for photographs and produces small files that every camera, phone, browser and app can open. It supports neither transparency nor animation, and each re-save discards a little more detail.

Why convert GIF to JPG?
JPG produces small files that open everywhere, from decade-old software to web forms with strict size limits, which makes it the universal format for photos. GIF is limited to 256 colours, so photos and gradients look grainy, and its files are large for what they show.
Does converting GIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a little detail is discarded to make the file smaller. At 85 percent quality or higher the difference is invisible for most images, and you can push the slider to 100 for maximum fidelity.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency. Transparent areas of the GIF image are flattened onto a white background. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Does it convert animated GIFs?
Only the first frame. JPG output here is a still image, so an animated GIF becomes a single JPG image showing its first frame.
