About the GIF format
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates from 1987 and lives on because of its animation support. It is limited to 256 colours per frame and simple on/off transparency, so photos look grainy and files are large for what they show. For still images there is almost always a better format.
About the PNG format
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format with full transparency support. It is the standard choice for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or text, where every pixel must survive intact. Its weakness is size: a photograph saved as PNG is far bigger than the same picture as JPG or WebP.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert GIF to PNG?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports full transparency, which makes it the safe choice for logos, screenshots and graphics that will be edited again. GIF is limited to 256 colours, so photos and gradients look grainy, and its files are large for what they show.
Does converting GIF to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is a lossless format, so every pixel of the GIF image is stored exactly as it was decoded. The file may end up larger than the original, especially for photos.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Both GIF and PNG support transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent in the converted image.
Does it convert animated GIFs?
Only the first frame. PNG output here is a still image, so an animated GIF becomes a single PNG image showing its first frame.
Can I convert several GIF files at once?
Yes. Add up to 5 images of up to 30 MB each, convert them in one go, and download the results one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Are my GIF images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to any server, so your pictures never leave your computer or phone.
Is the GIF to PNG converter free?
Yes, completely. No account, no watermark, and no limit beyond 30 MB per image. PixKit is supported by ads.
